Elite
RECOMMENDATION INFO
If Elite were to be released today, it would get a ranking of maybe 2 or 3. Back in 1982, all that was there were 2 dimensional, repetitive games like pac-man and space invaders. Then seemingly out of the blue came this beautiful complex playable 3 dimensional space trading/ fighting game. I first saw it on a BBC micro at college, and it blew me away. Other games have done it better since, not least Braben's follow up, "Frontier", but the sheer quantum leap that Elite represents in the history of computer games, it has to be right up there at the top.
You can read an account of it's creation at the link below... http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1064107,00.html
