Elephant - Gus van Sant, 2003
"Gus van Sant's output is almost unique amongst directors - somehow he manages to slip from the decidedly left-field films (My Own Private Idaho, his frame-by-frame remake of Psycho) into big "Hollywood" films (Good Will Hunting) and back again without any problem. Along the way, he's also directed well acclaimed middle-ground films such as To Die For, shot music videos and become a published author."
If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things - Jon McGregor
"This book, the first by Nottingham based author Jon McGregor won several awards, not least the Somerset Maugham prize."
Interstellar 5555
"As a concept, the premise for Interstellar 5555 sounds distinctly more 70's prog-rock than 21st century. Making an hour long animated film, soundtracked entirely by your music (no dialogue at all) would probably be the sort of thing you'd expect from 'Tales from the Topographic Oceans'-era Yes. It's not, perhaps, an idea you'd expect from French electronic dance act Daft Punk. And yet, in association with Toei animation, that's precisely what they've done. The film, made over 28 months of intensive work, is backed by music from the Discovery Album (2002). If you've seen any of the videos for the singles from that album, you've already seen parts of the Interstellar 5555."
Cypher - A second review.
"This is the latest film by Vincenzo Natali, who was the director of the low budget cult hit Cube. Indeed, in some ways it carries the theme of paranoia from that film over with it. However, the shadowy agency in Cypher isn't governmental, but corporate. Two huge firms dominate the story, and are locked in a war of subterfuge and escalating espionage."
The Reindeer Section: Son of Evil Reindeer.
"Arguably a Scottish "supergroup", The Reindeer Section are composed of members of virtually every decent band currently in existence north of the border."
Christopher Brookmyre - Quite Ugly One Morning/A Big Boy Did it and Ran Away
"Ok, clearly I'm being lazy reviewing two books here in the one review. However, my beefs about these books are pretty much interchangeable. So here goes:"
Nintendo Gamecube
"Finally, we Europeans get our hands on what the rest of the world has been playing for months. A "first impressions" review of Nintendo's latest offering."
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

"The follow up to 2000's Serious Sam, the Second Encounter is the inevitable sequel. The Question: "Do Bigs Guns Still Equal Big Fun?"."
GBA - the far-too-late review.

"Obviously, I got mine far later than the early-adopters on here, but here's a few thoughts on nintendo's latest baby..."
Return To Castle Wolfenstein - PC
added 2002 january 15
Games
"This is the eagerly awaited follow-up to the first real FPS Castle Wolfenstein. This was the game which spawned Doom, and in turn, the entire genre how well does this sequel measure up against its fantastically advanced descendants?"
Serious Sam - PC
added 2002 january 15
Games
"Croatian developers Croteams first game, Serious Sam never made the splash it deserved to on release last year, perhaps because it was fairly different to other FPS games which were coming out at the time."
Alien vs. Predator 2 - PC

"I have to admit to not having been a huge fan of the original AvP, so it was with some trepidation that I installed this sequel onto my PC."
His Dark Materials - A Second Opinion.
"Ostensibly aimed at children, the His Dark Materials books could very easily be read by the unwitting adult without them ever catching on that they are not the target market. Were it not for the fact that I bought my copies from the childrens section of Waterstones, I definitely wouldn't have known."
Memento
"A truly brilliant film - clever, innovative, thrilling, funny and moving..."
Black and White
"The game so immersive it spawned its own list-within-a-list! Now that the hype has died down, lets take a more objective view - just how good is it really?"
Watchmen - Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
"The graphic novel which breathed new life into the Superhero genre is a million miles away from what you might first expect. Avoiding the glossy cliches and whiter-than-white heroes that had traditionally been the mainstay of such novels, Moore instead attempts something which sounds almost oxymoronic - to make his superheroes normal people."
