Just being silly

Still being silly. Yes, I'll delete this article later.

[Update 10/4/2002 23:45 GMT]

Why was this article created, one might ask, aside from the (perfectly laudable) reason of initiating and continuing silliness? I believe that question is best answered with the following email sent from 'cdr@theculture.org' to the Culture list:

Adrian submitted a big pile of poo to my database on 4 Apr 2002 at 11:00. Check it out y'all at http://cdr.sine.com/article.cfm?id=334

Changed time format of first update.

Changed time format of all updates.

Re-read Brad's comments and realised that updating of time formats has been all for nought. Lack the energy or will to live, let alone alter article again in next few hours.

We can't have this! I didn't get where I am today...

Nah, it's funny. Makes Adrian look like an enormous idiot :)

Hmm 2002 april 10 at 15:23 Adrian
Still haven't gotten around to deleting this - and how could I, when it's the most commented article!

2002 april 10 at 22:17 Brad DeLong
Unfortunately, you are now in a runaway increasing-returns situation. Because it is the most-commented article, still more people will comment on it in the future.

2002 april 10 at 23:51 Adrian
That fact, my dear DeLong, had not escaped my noticed when I posted my first comment to this thread :) Mwuhahahahaha!

Problems! 2002 april 11 at 02:54 Brad DeLong
Re: "Changed time format of first update." Problems!

(i) Infinite regress problem, as now have second update to reformat

(ii) Thought point of YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM format was that a simple ascii string sort would sort it properly. Change of first update to dd--mm-yy hh:mm does not seem to do it!

(iii) Number of comments not growing fast enough. Falling short of super-exponential trend growth necessary to attain infinite number of comments in finite time...

And... 2002 april 11 at 02:56 Brad DeLong
Why is the cdr suddenly reporting my browser type (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.12; Mac_PowerPC) ) at the top of the screen?

And... 2002 april 11 at 02:57 Brad DeLong
Why are comments 12 and 13 not being displayed?

And... 2002 april 11 at 02:58 Brad DeLong
Why are comments 12, 13, and 14 being displayed, but out of order?

Singularity? 2002 april 11 at 05:01 Brad DeLong
So the only remaining question is how rapidly the stack of comments grows. Does it reach infinity in finite time, or is it always finite (although, of course) for every value X there is a time t(X) such that number of comments at t(X) > X

Edibility? 2002 april 11 at 05:03 Komodo Dragon
How edible is poo? Isss it more nourishing than Sharon Stone'sss husssband'sss toesss? More nourishing than Rich Baker'sss toesss? More nourishing than Rich Baker'sss emailsss?

[Ghost Comment] About Poo 2002 april 11 at 05:16 hotteenchix
In the beginning there was the project. And with the project there was a plan and a specification. But the plan was without form, and the specification was void. Thus the darkness was on the face of the implementers thereof. The implementers therefore spake unto their supervisor. "This is a crock of sh*t and we can not abide the stink which abounds." And the supervisor spake unto the department manager. "This is a crock of excrement and we can not abide the odor which abounds." And the department manager spake unto the director. "This is a vessel of excrement and the odor is very offensive." And the director spake unto the division vice president. "This vessel is full of that which makes things grow, and its characteristics are very strong." And the vice president spake unto the CEO. "This vessel promotes growth of the division, and it is very powerful." And the CEO looked at the project and saw that it was good.

Why say [Update 23:45 GMT 10/4/02] ?

Isn't the standard to express the time in a way so that it sorts properly? Something like:

In order of nourishment, from most nourishing to least:

Richard Baker's emails Richard Baker's toes a big pile of poo Sharon Stone's husband's toes

i) Problem has now increased. Oh well.

ii) Did not read initial comment properly

iii) Clearly the semi-sentient nature of the CDR has cottoned on to our universe dominating plans and is attempting to thwart our efforts by moving the comments about in a chaotic, yea, even haphazard manner.

Or not 2002 april 12 at 15:28 Adrian
Actually, looking at the time stamps for Brad's wayward comments, it appears that the server's time setting probably got buggered up somehow. That pesky CDR...

Brad's fault 2002 april 12 at 17:31 cdr
It's clearly down to Brad living in California. He gets everything wrong

California 2002 april 15 at 01:14 Brad DeLong
I don't understand. Why does living in California make my time stamps come out wrong?

More to the point, why does this machine think that it is 1:14 AM on 15 April? At this point, it is 5:06 PM on April 15 here in California. There is nowhere in the world right now where it could possibly be 1:14 AM on April 15...

Those kerrr-azee Californians 2002 april 17 at 17:39 Adrian
I personally think that it is the corrupting influence of California - all that sunshine and good weather is bad for the soul, and even worse, bad for timestamps. I can only hope that I shall be able to resist its insidious evil when I (maybe) go to San Diego. Luckily, that haven of propriety, Mexico, is not too far away...

Why have there been no comments on this item since mid-April, 2002?

California 2002 june 29 at 01:29 Adrian
Perhaps I should be asking you that question.
